TUTORIAL - How to use HD wingcam(720p) as an FPV cam + recording camera

Today i am going to post tutorial to get live output as well as record video in HD at the same time from hobbyking HD wing cam(720p). The camera available at hobbyking at price of just 36.98$ and best part is the weight of cam which is just 30g which makes it hot favorite of FPV fliers as you can put front and back cameras or even more for other views together to get more footage. The quality of video is good but it lacks of live video output function, with supplied AV cable you can watch recorded videos and images on TV and change camera settings as per your needs but can't use it for FPV cam, however there's a way to use it as a FPV camera.

Before we go any further i am sure you are well aware of its functions. If not i am going to post quick guide to using it. The cam has 3 buttons to get your work done out of it. The LED indicator and vibration motor gives you idea in which mode you are running the cam. We will identify 3 buttons from SD card slot side are button1, middle button is 2 and last near lens side is button3.

NOW WIRED TRICK
This trick is to understand how actually cam feeds live output. To get live output switch on the cam by pressing button1. Now press button1 two times to select MD (motion detection) video mode. Now connect supllied AV cable to the cam and you will see live feed from the cam. Now press button2 to start recording in real time.

WIRELESS TRICK
Now to use cam for FPV and recording as well you have to connect it to the Vtx but supplied HD wing cam cable has 2.5mm audio jack pin to AV male pin while Vtx has completely different molex five pin interface. Please check below image

To simplify all these you just need AV female pin(any color but ensure ground and signal wire). You can find it in any local electronics shop. Check below image

All you need to do is make your own DIY cable. Cut female AV single pin from RCA cable. If you cut yellow pin you will generally see yellow and black wires. The black is ground and yellow is signal wire. On other end to connect cable to the RC305 TX you can use molex pin but mine is soldered with sony CCD cam which i am using on ther quad so to make completely new cable i used spare pin of servo cable and heat shrinked exposed parts. Check below image

You can use jumper cable as well. Your DIY cable is ready. Long story short, you have now cable which has AV female pin at one end and at other end it has two pins which you need to connect to the VTX to get your live feed and recording. Please note i have used white pin(color doesn't matter)

PROCEDURE:
first switch on the VTX and keep everything ready and then start the HD wingcam switch to the motion tracking video mode, connect supplied 2.5mm audio jack pin to AV male pins cable and then our DIY cable to the yellow pin and other end to the VTX. Check below images of supplies AV cable and DIY cable

Here is diagram of final connection

You will see live feed now press button2 to start recording.

This can be the best solution for mini quads where even single gram weight matters.
